Bergamot essential oil (Citrus begamia)

Family Name: Rutaceae

Description: The bergamot tree bears fruits that resemble oranges, which are slightly pear shaped. It belongs to the same family as the orange tree and the essential oil is obtained by expression of the peel of the fruit.

Origins: In the Far East the gum was used as incense to drive away evil spirits. Known in Europe during the Middle Ages when it was used as a compound tincture for inhalation. It was then called ‘Friars Balsam’.

Uses: Helps to regulate appetite. Useful for treating oily skin problems. Bergamot has an uplifting effect on the emotions. The essential oil has antispasmodic, calmative, antiseptic, sedative and uplifting properties.

Cautionary Note: Avoid use of this oil with babies and children. Irritating oil in high doses. Avoid direct sunlight after use of this oil due to its phototoxic properties.
